     Glossary

Biostimulant- organic substances or materials that stimulate plant growth naturally.

Ectomycorrhizae- The term ECTO describes the types of mycorrhizae that colonize plants on the outside of the root surface. Generally speaking, ecto-mycorrhizae colonize plants that are woody conifers. However several commonly used ground covers are ecto-mycorrhizal while the great redwood trees are endo-mycorrhizal. Therefore, there is potential for confusion if not innoculating with broad-spectrum mycorrhizal inoculants.

Endomycorrhizae- The term ENDO describes the types of mycorrhizae that colonize plants on the inside of the root surface. Another common name for endo-mycorrhizae are Vesicular Arbscular Mycorrhizae (VAM). Generally speaking, endo-mycorrhizae colonize the rest of the plant species commonly regarded as important agricultural crops as well as ornamental plants.

Hyphae- Any of the thread like parts making up the mycelium of a fungus.

Inoculate- To put or implant microorganisms into soil to stimulate growth, fix nitrogen, ect.

Mycelium- The vegetative part of a fungus made of a mass or network of threadlike tubes, or hyphae.

Mycorrhizae (my-core-rye-zay)- Fungus-Root that attaches to plant roots in the form of hyphae, that function as roots (see information page).

Spore- A small reproductive body usually consisting of a single cell, capable of giving rise to a new adult individual either immediately or after a period of dormancy.

VAM- Vesicular-Arbuscular-Mycorrhizae- Pertains to storage and exchange structures (vesicules & arbuscules) produced by mycorrhizal fungi within the root system of the colonized plant. Also known as Endo-Mycorrhizae.
